The second wave of runners get under way!

Glorious sunshine made a great day for spectators and a hot day for runners. Plenty of fluids were in order!

England and Australia battled it out in the Great North Games on the Quayside this afternoon.

Quite a few adults covered the 3 mile Junior run supporting and encouraging their offspring along the way

The times weren't as fast as the club runners but finishing is a victory for everyone. Even better when it's shared!

Marc Burgum is a 27 year old former winner of the Galaxy Manhunt competition.  Now living in London he combines a busy working week with his training routine to ensure he stays in great shape year round.  We meet up with Marc to find out more about the techniques and diet he uses to keep himself looking great!

Ladies … just relax.  I’ll answer the question you are dying to know at the end of this interview! Patience is a virtue .. Some of you might recognise Marc as a previous winner of the Galaxy Manhunt competition run by the radio station across the Northeast.  You may even have had the Galaxy Manhunt calendar in the office with Mark showing off his toned torso within its pages.  The competition to find the region’s hottest guys certainly was popular with the ladies and I don’t think it did Mark any harm in terms of female attention either.  As part of the new magazine we are looking at how real people get in great shape, their motivations, desires, training and nutrition methods and the impact being fit and trim has on their lives generally.  It’s two years since Marc was one of the Manhunt winners and in 2010 he’s still in even better shape and clearly just as motivated by his training as ever.

Boosting your metabolism is a sure fire way to increase weight loss and ultimately helps in getting in to better shape.  The issue is how do you do it?  There’s a vast amount of information available on the internet but there’s no need to go searching … because we’ve got it all here for you in these pages!  First of all let’s start with a definition of metabolism which in its basic form is “the speed that the body converts food into energy”  Of course the process is much more complicated than that but for our purposes it does the job.  Clearly speeding up your metabolism will result in your body making better and more efficient use of the food you put in it.  So now that we have that basic understanding what do you have to do to get your metabolism up to speed?

Do you want to burn excess fat, lose weight and/or tone up?

We find that most our members are coming to the gym to achieve goals such as weight loss and muscle toning. Analysis of the type of work most gym members do to achieve these types of goals shows that a focus on exercise is prioritized, specifically cardio exercise performed using long steady efforts. Nutrition is generally not focused on much and where it is, in many instances details are focused on, such as avoiding a certain food, this is important but is second to having a strategy for fat burning and losing weight.

There’s a good case for doing a little and often in terms of exercise.  No one is denying the benefits of some high intensity training however doing a little moderate intensity exercise when possible can make a real difference in fighting the effects of sedentary living.
There are other advantages for moderate exercise.  Certain target groups can benefit more from moderate intensity exercise and these groups include the middle aged or those who are medically obese.

The Northeast of England can sometimes be the subject of bad press when it comes to being fit and healthy.  It doesn’t matter if its Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sunderland or Hartlepool that is on the receiving end of the bad publicity the comments affect the region as a whole.  Despite the bad press the Northeast isn’t full of people with no interest in being fitter.  Of course there are regions where there are problems, and there are people who either don’t have the motivation or the inclination to get up and do something about it.  If you have too many people tell you, for too long, that you can’t lead a healthier lifestyle then all that publicity might end up with you thinking that’s the case.  Let me assure you it is not!

We are keen to work with northeast gyms, health clubs and fitness companies to promote better living in the Northeast.  It’s not about getting everyone to become a total fitness fanatic, although of course it’s good when people do get that enthusiastic!  It’s about education and motivation.  It’s about helping people find places and ways that can help them be fitter and healthier.  Its about making people see the benefits of doing it, rather than just continuing on the path they are on now.
We are actively targeting all the major health clubs chains, including David Lloyds, Fitness First, Total Fitness, Livingwell, Greens, DW Fitness and more with the aim of having them work with us to promote fitness across the region.  Of course health clubs aren’t the only way to get fit, and there are many free ways in which you can make a start on the road to a better and healthier life.  We will be guiding you there too, as well as featuring up coming events, training programs, workouts, and sports coverage.  If you have a business in the Northeast and you are passionate about helping the region to be a better and healthier place then maybe you can distribute copies of NE FIT magazine or participate in some other way.  Lets be positive about what the Northeast has to offer in terms of both living and fitness!!

Protein Shakes can easily boost your intake without eating more food!

As we often highlight throughout the magazine, taking on board enough protein post muscle building workouts is essential in aiding muscle growth.  Of course eating a good amount of protein through your diets is the main core of this however it’s also a positive point to supplement this with some good quality protein shakes.  The base for most shakes you will make is a good quality protein powder and there are plenty of choices on the market.  Some taste pretty abysmal whilst others are actually quite nice!  Go with the established brands to ensure you are getting a high quality product.
Here’s a few recipes to get you started!
